World Map II

World Map II, 1995–96. Cut paper on board, 51 × 36 inches (129.5 × 91.4 cm)
Several years after making World Map, I worked with the same paper map again to make World Map II. This time, my method for scrambling the map was to slice it into long horizontal strips and then rearrange those strips to create what I thought of as a hand-made, digital image. It looked like a glitch, but I made it very deliberately and by analog means. I often let the strips accumulate just enough to trigger recognition of familiar land masses, and then disrupted them before they resolved into something fixed and known.
